Sigli worked with a leading IoT solutions provider to modernise a web-based fleet management platform that serves transport companies across Europe. Sigli migrated functionality from an ageing legacy codebase, refactored its most fragile core processes, delivered a suite of new features, and created comprehensive documentation from scratch. The result was a significantly more stable and maintainable platform, with legacy-to-modern feature migration increasing from approximately 70% to 95%.

Rearchitected the trailer device management system, removing a redundant database and adding support for all vehicle device types
Automated vehicle setup for users, reducing manual configuration

Created internal developer documentation from scratch for a previously undocumented system

Our client is a leading provider of IoT solutions. It serves a global market and a broad range of industries, including but not limited to logistics, security, healthcare, construction, and power infrastructure.
One of its core products is a unified, cloud-based fleet and transport management platform. It gives fleet managers real-time visibility over vehicles and trailers and tracks fuel consumption, driver hours, back-office efficiency, and more.

Along with a full supporting team, Sigli provided a long-term embedded backend engineer who worked as a core member of our client’s software department. They were responsible for ongoing legacy-to-modern migration, refactoring, feature development, and the creation of developer documentation.
The most significant initiative was a full rearchitecting of the trailer management system. The engineer led analysis and implementation, removed a redundant database, and consolidated all device types (vehicle and trailers) into a single unified structure.
For many devices, setup is now fully automated: a new device is added to the system automatically on its first data transmission, removing manual steps and the common technical issues they caused.
Legacy analysis and discovery: mapping out of the legacy system, including dependencies and the highest-risk processes.

Solution design and architecture: high-level design of the unified device system and the migration process.

Implementation and development: migration of legacy functionality, refactoring of critical processes, and implementation of new features.

Testing and stabilisation: comprehensive quality assurance across all areas, particularly in relation to fragile data processes.

Documentation and knowledge transfer: creation of developer documentation.

The project followed Agile and Scrum methodologies, with two-week sprints, regular refinements, retrospectives, and demos. The team was made up of frontend and backend developers, a team lead, a DevOps engineer, and a product owner, with Sigli's engineer fully integrated as a member of our client’s team.

The FleetVisor platform was fully stabilised and modernised. New features were added, the most fragile parts of the codebase were refactored, and nearly all remaining legacy functionality was migrated to the modern platform.
Here were the key project outcomes:

Migrated feature coverage increased from 70% to 95%

Automated trailer device setup, reducing manual effort and support tickets

Targeted fixes and rewrites that reduced incidents related to error-prone data processing

Developer documentation created from scratch, eliminating siloed knowledge and reducing maintenance and support burdens on the team
Sigli's engineer integrated into our team from day one and took real ownership of a range of time-sensitive tasks. In particular, the new trailer device architecture and the documentation they left behind have made the whole platform easier to maintain.
