Tech Transformation for a Leading Ecommerce Comparison Website

Sigli & The ecommerce website

OVERVIEW

The ecommerce website is a popular product comparison website. It relied on a complex backend to manage dynamic product pages, affiliate sales and partner compensation schemes. Sigli completed wide-scale infrastructure changes and upgrades, including migrating to a headless CMS and expanding functionality. The platform saw a range of efficiency gains, leading to substantial cost reductions.

Client Overview

The client company was a popular ecommerce product comparison site that generated revenue through referral links. Its thirteen websites aggregated top-selling products from popular ecommerce platforms and compared them, providing information about price and features and showing customer reviews. The platform also promoted these products using platforms like Google Ads (among others).

The Problem: Complex Technology Requirements

The client showcased tens of thousands of products on its site, all with information that needed to be up to date. It also had to manage relationships and revenue-sharing models with multiple affiliates.

Running a large product comparison website is no easy feat. It requires a platform that’s not only capable of handling complex tasks but that also provides a fast, intuitive customer experience.

The ecommerce website’s infrastructure at the time had a number of issues. These included costly inefficiencies and an over-reliance on its CMS. In addition, modifying the site in line with user feedback and analytics was difficult due to a lack of customisation tools.

Transform and Futureproof The Client’s Platform

The client asked Sigli to execute a transformation plan across a substantial portion of its key infrastructure. Comprehensive upgrades would allow for the rollout of an improved product and marketing strategy, putting the platform in a stronger position to innovate and adapt to ever-evolving consumer demands.

The client required “transformation” across three key areas:

Platform transformation

Creation of a new tech stack based on a headless CMS (ContentStack) that was reliable, scalable and available (no downtime).

Infrastructure transformation

Transition of infrastructure to the cloud (AWS) with updated features for invoicing, sales tracking, partner management, and a Salesforce integration.

Organisational transformation

Implementation of tools for the successful operation of domain-based teams with separate specialisations in the company.

The Process: Managing Multiple Development Workflows

The project ran from July 2022 to October 2023, and four engineers joined the client’s existing team.

Sigli followed a four-step process:

Research and analyse requirements.

Establish team management protocols.

Complete development tasks.

Test and debug new solutions.

Project Team and Management Overview

Communication

Communication was via virtual meetings, email and a messenger app.

Project Management

Sigli used the scrum methodology. A product owner (PO) maintained both effective team collaboration and consistent communication with stakeholders and decision makers from the client’s side. Standard rituals like daily meetings, sprint planning and retrospectives ensured tasks were completed to deadline.

The Results: Comprehensive Platform Improvements

Unfortunately, the merger of the client’s company with another entity cut the project short. However, Sigli made significant improvements to the platform during the course of its involvement.

Here were the key project outcomes:

Built additional tools for the product team to customise the shopping experience.

Partly migrated the platform to a headless CMS.

Simplified large portions of the platform architecture, leading to reduced technical debt.

Cut costs infrastructure and operational costs, especially related to managing, aggregating and categorising products).

Reduced the risk of failure of on-premise infrastructure.

We hired Sigli to move the CMS to ContentStack and generally upgrade the affiliate-based comparison website. All work was going well and we made several major upgrades before the merger with another entity. We wanted to take a hands-off approach and Sigli excelled in that regard, taking care of everything while keeping us up to date.
