Optimising a No-Code Website Builder

OVERVIEW

Sigli was hired to optimise a no-code ecommerce website builder used by small businesses. We were also tasked with speeding up feature delivery workflows. In less than six months, we updated the platform backend, expanded user functionality, and refined internal dev workflows to allow our client’s in-house team to ship features quickly and reliably.

Snapshot

Restructured (or refactored) backend code to improve performance across a range

Client Overview

Our client is an up-and-coming digital strategy and software development company that works across several verticals.

Its website builder, a core offering, combines data management, website design, product display, inventory management, order processing, and an intuitive user interface.

The result is a comprehensive, self-contained solution for building an online store, with no technical expertise required.

The Problem: Standing Out in the Competitive No-Code Sector

The popularity of no-code platforms, especially website builders, has grown substantially in recent years. It is a crowded and competitive but also profitable space.

The challenge with codeless platforms lies in delivering complex technical functionality through intuitive interfaces, all while maintaining performance standards.

To stay competitive, our client knew that exceptional latency (speed), uptime, scalability, and user experience were non-negotiable. In addition, it needed the ability to ship new features quickly and with a minimum of bugs.

The Process: A Slimmed-Down Team That Worked Fast

Sigli assigned two experienced developers to the project who worked with our client’s in-house team.

A frontend software engineer was responsible for developing user components for the website builder, improving code architecture, refactoring code, and providing consultancy.

A full-stack software engineer focused on overall performance improvements across the database, frontend, and backend.

Sigli followed a three-step process:

Research and analysis of requirements, including evaluation of infrastructure options and third-party dependencies

Full-stack application development and cloud setup with Kubernetes

Bug fixing and support, which included responding to user feature requests

Project Team and Management Overview

Communication

The team was made up of four AI engineers, three full-stack engineers, three frontend engineers, and two quality assurance specialists, alongside a solutions Architect and Delivery Manager. Communication was via virtual meetings with key stakeholders. We used email and WhatsApp as always-on channels.

Project Management

We used scrum as the project framework. Regular “rituals” or “ceremonies” (as they are called in the scrum framework) included daily meetings, sprint planning, and retrospectives.

The Results: Full Platform Optimisation

Sigli delivered on all project deliverables and goals. We enhanced the user dashboard and expanded the feature set, both of which contributed to stronger client retention and satisfaction.

In addition, the refactored codebase (which had substantially fewer bugs) and improved dev processes meant our client could ship features safely and quickly.

Here were the key project outcomes:

Executed comprehensive code refactoring to eliminate redundancies and bugs in the backend

Reduced technical debt through systematic elimination of legacy code

Redesigned underlying architecture for better maintainability and scalability

Integrated best-in-class infrastructure-as-code tools

Drove substantial performance gains across a range of metrics, with a 300% improvement in some cases

Increased the speed of new feature implementation by streamlining the internal development workflow

Developed additional components for end users, including a dynamic news feed and automated email notifications

Overcame challenges associated with complex databases and cloud infrastructure that hosted multiple sites, each with a separate domain

Sigli’s high-quality work led to several important efficiency and cost gains. Their extensive cooperation and consultancy with our dev team also ensured that we were able to innovate independently moving forward, which is essential in this competitive space.
