Sigli built a feature-rich platform for the E-learning Partner that allows experts to publish courses and generate revenue. Sigli also updated the legacy email management system. The new architecture forms the basis of the E-learning PPartner’s innovative approach to digital learning, which involves providing free user-created courses that are monetised with completion certificates and pay-per-click ads.
Delivered a complete course-creation platform for the client's users
Increased revenues by adding support for paid course certificates
Extended functionality of email management system and improved deliverability
Optimised perfomance and reduced platform downtime during peak usage
The bulk of communication was through a mix of in-person and virtual meetings, with email and messaging used as a secondary channel throughout.
Sigli used the scrum framework for project coordination, with a Product Owner (PO) responsible for managing the team and acting as a point of contact with the E-Learning Platform. Consistent rituals, in the form of daily meetings, sprint planning, and retrospectives, were a key part of the process.
Digital education
Ireland
Large enterprise (350+ employees)
The E-Learning Provider is one of the most popular free educational platforms in the world. It offers over 5000 courses, and a considerable 40 million learners have benefited from the E-Learning Provider’s learning materials. It has also won several awards for its digital education innovations.
The E-Learning Provider generates revenue through pay-per-click (PPC) ads and the sale of course certificates. Courses are accredited by the UK’s professional development body, the CPD Institute.
The course creation architecture was the core part of the project, but the addition of paid certificates and updates to the E-Learning Provider’s email platform were equally important. It would also be necessary to remedy any bugs and respond to user requests after implementation.
At Sigli, we recognised that this would be a significant undertaking. We opted for a phased approach that prioritised quality assurance, testing, and ongoing support, in addition to rigorous development best practices.
Sigli’s brief from the client covered three main areas:
Course creation architecture
Support for additional revenue streams (course certificates)
Updates to the email distribution platform
Architecture setup
Application development and features implementation
Quality assurance and user testing
Stabilization and fine-tuning
The Educational Platform traditionally relied on select partnerships to create its courses. However, it made the decision to open the platform to users, allowing anybody with expertise to launch their own courses and earn a portion of the revenue.
This warranted large-scale architecture changes, including the introduction of a creator platform with functionality to design high-quality learning materials and distribute proceeds from ad clicks and certificate sales.
In addition, the Digital Learning Provider's legacy system needed extensive updates to handle over four million email addresses (and growing), with load distribution, deliverability, and email address management requiring attention.
Here’s what the client’s infrastructure looked like after Sigli’s work:
A full-feature course creation platform: a course creation and monetisation system with paid certificates. Course creators have tools to make engaging multimedia learning materials with slides, audio, video and tests. Revenue distribution is automated.
Reliable email delivery at scale: an email management and distribution platform able to handle complex tasks (like personalisation, segmentation and A/B testing) and scale efficiently. The system automatically distributes email traffic across multiple SMTP servers and rotates addresses to improve deliverability.
Increased platform speed and stability: ongoing support to minimise downtime, fix bugs, respond to user requests, and onboard the client's employees where necessary. After the course architecture was delivered, Sigli focused on optimising platform performance, especially in periods of continuous load, and made sure the whole system was stable.
This was quite a long project, spanning more than a year, and involved the central part of the company. So it was important for us to have clear communication throughout, both with our internal team and our users during the testing phase. Sigli were adaptable and highly process-driven and made sure that all stakeholders were involved. We're very happy with the finished product and expect it to be a solid foundation for driving innovation and user engagement.
