Building a Complex Ecommerce Platform

Sigli & Software Wholesaler

OVERVIEW

This project involved a client we have worked with many times in the past. It distributes software and hardware products to a global market of resellers. Its legacy, soon-to-be deprecated Intershop ecommerce platform was no longer fit for purpose. We were asked to build a new platform from the ground up. We worked with a system integrator to architect a solution roadmap that incorporated cross-departmental optimisation feedback and the very latest functionality. Development is set to finish towards the end of 2025.

Helped pick a system integrator that was an ideal fit and worked with them to adjust third-party integrations.

Gathered cross-departmental feedback with a view to improving the current platform to better suit employee needs.

Began development of the solution, called WebShop, with delivery set for the end of 2025.

Client Overview

Our client sells automation, logistics and telecoms technology to a diverse client base spread across France and the Benelux trio of countries (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg). It provides both its own solutions and those of well-known brands.

In its own words, the company “stands between customers and suppliers and offers knowledge-oriented distribution.” The combination of its large catalogue of products and proactive approach to client education and consulting is one of its unique selling points.

It remains a family business with a customer-centric and value-driven approach. It is fully committed to driving innovation and providing exceptional customer experiences.

The problem: An Outdated Ecommerce Platform

Our client’s customers are software and hardware resellers. Its ecommerce website, which offers a large ecosystem of in-house and external services, is one of its primary sales channels. It allows for complex deals with resellers at scale.

The old platform was built using the on-premises version of Intershop, which is planned to be deprecated by 2025.

To continue providing uninterrupted, high-quality service and maintain profits, our client required an in-house platform that would allow for complete developmental control and eliminate the risk of vendor lock-in.

The Process: Comprehensive Review and Deployment

To speed up the time to implementation, our client decided to enlist the help of a system integrator. They would combine various third-party services, like Algolia for search and Contentful for content management, to create a unified system.

After architecting the solution, Sigli’s priority was to help choose the right integrator. The integrator made necessary adjustments with Sigli’s assistance, and we took full control of the project.

Sigli followed a five-step process:

Identify business requirements by analysing current software and holding cross-departmental discussions.

Architect solution and decide on system infrastructure.

Help choose the right system integrator by participating in negotiations.

Help integrators adjust their software to our client’s style and standards.

Proceed with the planned development and implementation workflow.

Project Team and Management Overview

Communication

The majority of communication was via virtual meetings in Microsoft Teams and Gather Town. Everybody involved had access to email and messaging channels.

Project Management

Sigli used the scrum methodology, with a product owner (PO) responsible for effective team collaboration and consistent communication with stakeholders. Standard routines like daily meetings, sprint planning and retrospectives ensured tasks were completed to deadline.

The Results: A Solution Blueprint With Six-Month Delivery

Sigli began by auditing the existing legacy platform and finished with
a ready-to-implement roadmap with specified goals, timeframes, and an established team. This process took six months, which is extremely efficient for a project of this type.

Here were the key project outcomes:

Full audit of legacy software and gathering of optimisation feedback from existing users.

New solution plan and design (replicating existing functionality where appropriate) and project roadmap.

Guidance and assistance in choosing the best system integrator and adjusting third-party tools.

Commencement of the development process, with delivery planned for the end of 2025.

"We’ve been impressed with Sigli’s ability to deliver and are continuing to work with them."
